As silly as this question might seem, I would appreciate if you could answer this. I am... gathering data for myself. I'm sure you can piece together why, but I will refrain from more details so as to minimize a potential bias.

In the hypothetical or non-hypothetical situation in which you have a significant other, on Thanksgiving, Christmas eve, and/or Christmas day, who were you with and why?

A possible answer could go like this:
I spent Thanksgiving with my friends because my break wasn't long enough to warrant a trip home, but I spent Christmas eve and day with my family. I did not celebrate the holiday with my girlfriend because we have only been dating for a month and I did not want to put that added pressure on the relationship.

or

I do not have a partner, but if I had one, I would probably like to go out for a special Christmas dinner with him on Christmas Eve and then spend Christmas day with both my partner and my family, together.

or

I do not currently have a boyfriend, but last year, I spent all of the holidays with my previous partner.

Using http://abicollab.net from within AbiWord
This post is public domain. Feel free to copy and paste where ever you like

The combination of the AbiWord word processor and the http://abicollab.net webservice provides world-leading real-time collaborative functionality available nowhere else for any price at all. Now that Fedora 12 is out and distributes AbiWord-2.8 it is easy for Linux users to try it out and see if they find it useful.

My previous blog posts about http://abicollab.net focused on the use of the service from within a browser. You can find them here:

1. Basic operations including how the AbiWord “save” function sends the document back to abicollab.net.
2. How one could go about finding the friend you want to collaborate with.
3. How to setup a real time collaboration
4. The use of  Groups, View, Export in abicollab.net

AbiWord also has additional hooks back into the webservice that are accessible from within the “collaborate” menu.

To start with we need to establish the connection with the service. This is done with the “account” menu item.

I’ve already got an account set up based on my gmail email address. However if I didn’t or if I wanted another based on a different email address, I just click “add” and fill the details as shown.

Besides the web service one can connect to other AbiWord using either TCP/IP (if you know the IP address) or via the jabber XMPP protocol. The webservice is much easier for users and connect with. Everyone on the internet has an email address.

Clicking the button on “connect on application startup” means you don;t have to go through this step again.

If I now go back to the “collaborate” menu and choose “open shared document”, AbiWord connects to the webservice and presents me with a list of the documents I have to on http://abicollab.net

Here are the list of groups and user accounts which contain documents I’m allowed to edit. The 3 Martin Sevior’s show up because I have 3 separate accounts on the service :-)

Of course clicking the table expander arrow shows me all the eligible documents. As you can see I use the service and find it a convenient way to keep my work in synch across my 3 different work environments. (Work workstation, laptop and home PC).

Finally one can upload your current document to the web service. This is a very convenient way to both share your work with your colleagues and to upload it to the service and make it accessible to a different workspace.

To this click on “share document” in the collaborate menu. You have the option of sharing the document with as many of your groups and friends on the service as you wish.

Once uploaded to http://abicollab.net the document is of course available to be shared with your friends and colleagues and easily available at all your work spaces.

Like my previous posts this document has been uploaded to abicollab.net and is available at:

Etch-a-Sketch doesn't involve much hill climbing. GPS-a-Sketch in San Francisco does, however:

Merry Christmas from me and [info]whatever_art to you!

In other news: not going anywhere for Christmas. Staying in San Francisco, hosting a 10 person orphan dinner. But then going to the Caribbean on a 7 night cruise over New Year's with parents, Sierra, my brother Cole and his girlfriend. Should be fun. :)

Half awake. About to take over a shift while [info]cassidyrose takes a nap. We're all exhausted.

Grandpa is trying to keep S. occupied, playing outside. S. has been acting out a lot more, looking for attention. We've both noticed another cognitive leap in the last week...

Holiday debuggery

We know there were a few kinks with the holiday promotion. We've been working very hard to get them ironed out. If you have a paid/permanent account, keep on sending those coupons. Here's an update:

  • If you were unable to send out multiple coupons at a time, please perform a hard refresh, and you should be good to go.
  • If you redeemed a coupon to upgrade your account and the balance at checkout was $0 instead of $9.95 or $15, this means your upgrade did not go through (nor were you charged). We've straightened this out, so you can now apply your holiday coupon toward the purchase of an annual paid account.
  • If you tried to redeem a holiday coupon and had trouble using a gift certificate to cover the balance of an annual paid account, we identified the root problem. If this happened to you, you can now use your holiday coupon together with your gift certificate.
  • If the number of holiday coupons you have available suddenly goes up (instead of down), this might be due to recipients declining the coupons, at which point your pool of available coupons will be replenished and, therefore, increase.
  • If you need assistance with holiday coupons or pretty much anything else (well, LiveJournal related), please open a support request and we'll be more than happy to help!

Tweaks

  • There were some initial glitches displaying results on My Guests, but we've worked them out. We hope you'll check out who's been checking you out!
  • Some of you reported formatting issues using the Rich Text Editor (i.e., line breaks were being removed incorrectly). We've implemented a fix! Thanks so much for your patience.

Give a little extra!

We're pleased to report that we've already sold over 100 virtual red ribbons in honor of National AIDS Awareness month. Remember, for each charitable vgift you purchase for $2.99, we'll donate 100 percent of gross proceeds to IAVI.org (the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) to fund the development of an HIV vaccine. Once again, we thank you for your generosity.

Celebrate with holiday vGifts!

Stop by the Virtual Gift Shop and share some holiday magic with your LiveJournal friends.

Photos of the week

We're back with more dazzling pictures from around the world. Congrats to [info]marlenemcc, who has been awarded a virtual blue ribbon as the winner of our fourth photo contest. We hope you'll click over to LJ_Photophile poll and tell us your picks in pics!

For more fantastic user content, we'll meet you under the cut. Read more... )

Curtains

Thanks, again, for reading. Here's wishing you the very merriest of holidays. We'll see you next year!

It's not all that often that we encounter things from Finland here in Portland. So imagine my surprise when we're on our way to our weekly date-night with Tove, and our baby-sitter is gushing about this adorable and wonderful Finnish YouTube video.. She apparently have been watching it three or four times a day for the last few days (weeks?), laughing hysterically.

I'm intrigued by this notion, so I look it up, and notice that I am very late to an internet phenomenon. The thing in question is Armi & Danny's "I Want to Love You Tender", which has apparently been a big hit on youtube for several years now.

Now, people who aren't from Finland may not realize the whole depth of that video. To an outsider, it may look like some highschool musical number with particularly inept dancing. It's funny, yes, but you go on to watch keyboard cat and dramatic chipmunk.

But to somebody from Finland, the first reaction is "I recognize that tune". The second reaction is "Oh, it's them!". That's not some inept highschool musical number, that's one of the most beloved Finnish entertainers ever! Ok, so the version you hear in Finland is in Finnish, and the above is the English version - and Finns back in the seventies weren't really all that good at English. That explains some of it.

When I grew up, the Swedes had ABBA and Björn Borg. The Finns had Armi ja Danny. Really.

Now I just find myself wishing that we'd have Finnish meal-pouches with musical accompaniments. "Rudolf in a Bag" MRE's (reindeer meat with lingonberries) with Armi and Danny on BluRay.

Although I'm not sure I could take the concentrated awesomeness that is "I Want to Love You Tender" in glorious HD. Maybe it's safer in that low-quality YouTube version.

1. Can a prof change a final grade?
2. What's the time window for this? I mean, I don't think I can find a prof from last sem and get him to change that grade right?
